Petaling Jaya, 26th May 2014 – Hong Leong MSIG Takaful Berhad (HLMT) and Al Madinah International University (MEDIU) have inked an MOU to work towards enriching HLMT staff and agents with Shariah knowledge.

The training program which is free of charge, will cover seven (7) modules ranging from Fundamentals of Shariah to Technical Shariah knowledge such as Shariah Risk Management and Underwriting. The program will run for a period of 14 weeks beginning from June this year.

The Chief Executive Officer of HLMT, En Wan Mohd Fadzlullah bin Wan Abdullah said, “In line with Government’s effort to make Malaysia an Islamic finance and takaful hub, it is imperative that HLMT equips its staff and agents with adequate Shariah knowledge so that they can interact better with customers to have better appreciation of Shariah. In addition, the initiative will complement the industry effort in developing human capital in Shariah knowledge, particularly in Takaful.”

Takaful is a Shariah compliant insurance, devoid of elements of riba’ (usury) and maisir (gambling) which are the two components strongly prohibited by Islam.

The program is expected to create a new generation of staff and takaful agents who are well-versed with the fundamentals of Shariah and its application in Islamic Finance. The program will be a catalyst to spark interest among young generations to join HLMT for professional career.

HLMT is a licensed composite takaful operator since 2006 and a strategic alliance between Hong Leong Financial Group Malaysia (HLFG), a reputable integrated financial services group and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Ltd. (MSI), a member of MS & AD Insurance Group of Japan, one of the world’s largest insurance companies.
